Sepsis is an infection-induced syndrome defined as the presence of two or more manifestations of a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). SIRS includes:
- Body temp greater than 38 C or less than 36 C.
- HR > 90/min.
- RR> 20/min or PaCO2 < 32mmHg.
- Leukocytosis (>12×109/L (>12,000/mm³)) or leukopenia (<4×109/L (<4000/mm³)).
- Mechanical control of ventilation is continued in postop period if hemodynamic instability or if inotropic support is needed.
