Gastric POCUS, 3-Part Episode

There are 5 commonly referred types of tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). Types A through E were described by Gross in 1953. The most common type, accounting for approximately 85% is the type C. Type C is characterized by esophageal atresia with distal tracheal fistula. TEF is associated with congenital anomalies referred to as VATER association. These congenital anomalies occur together more often than by chance. Some prefer VACTER because it includes the "C" for cardiac anomalies. "V" is vertebral anomalies, "A" is anal atresia, "C" is for congenital cardiac anomalies, "T" and "E" are for trachea-esophageal fistula, "R" is for both radial and/or renal anomalies. Colobomas are part of the CHARGE association not VATER. The renal anomalies with VATER include renal agenesis, reflux and renal failure. Nephrolithiasis is not part of the association. Likewise, chiari malformations (there are four types) are not part of the VATER association.
