Guidelines for Authors

1. Please adhere to our Policy on Evidence Based Medicine

To read, click on our Policy on Evidence Based Medicine

2. Please search for your subject before creating a new page (often one has already been created)

Searching for a suitable, preexisting page and editing said page rather than creating a duplicate page with a different name is much more efficient

3. If you are interested in creating a new section, a new unit, contact us

Email us at webmaster at openanesthesia dot org and we will either do it for you, or help you design your new section

4. Appropriately categorize your pages

For examples, look at the categories in other similar pages. To create a category, you type the following

[[Category:(insertcategoryname)]]

at the end of your page

5. Subjects Which Recur Are Candidates for Templates

Certain topics/subjects show up in various sections. For instance, PEEP might be a topic covered in both the anesthesia and critical care chapters. To prevent duplicate and conflicting information, MediaWiki allows templates. To create a template, you type ?title=template:nameofyourtemplate into your browser, and then make your page. Then, when you want to insert this template into another page (ex. pulmonary critical care, or mechanical ventilation), you type

{{nameoftemplate}}

For a great example, see http://www.openanesthesia.org/index.php?title=Template:Lidocaine_Toxicity, which is referred to in http://www.openanesthesia.org/index.php?title=Lidocaine_Toxicity. If you ever want to insert information about lidocaine toxicity into your page (ex. a pharmacology page), use the following format:

In order to import the Lidocaine Toxicity template into your webpage, type the following:

{{Lidocaine_Toxicity}}

and your page will automatically import the lidocaine toxicity information. This is a highly efficient way to access information, if you have suggestions about how it can be improved, let us know!

6. Put Medication Names in Bold

When reading a large paragraph, it is much easier to spot ephedrine than ephedrine. So, we ask that medications important to the paragraph be in bold font

7. Preferred Method for Citations - using popup windows (aka "Bubbles")

When reading a large paragraph, it is much easier to spot ephedrine than ephedrine. So, we ask that medications important to the paragraph be in bold font

One of the problems with following up on references is that it takes time - we have solved this by adding the balloons extension to our wiki. This means that you can make a popup balloon for each article you site. To do so, simply type the following text into the wiki:

<balloon title="insert abstract text here" style="color:green">Lastname et. al. Journal Volume: Page, Year</balloon>

which looks like this: Lastname et. al. Journal Volume: Page, Year

NOTE: you cannot use less than or greater than signs (< >) in popup windows, nor can you use quotes, as these confuse the javascript. If the abstract you are displaying has these symbols, please remove them (otherwise it won't work). You can just write "less than" or "greater than" instead
