Head and Neck Injuries

Zone II injuries (from the clavicle to the angle mandible) are usually operated on emergently, otherwise most repairs of head/neck/ENT trauma can be accomplished on an urgent (but not emergent) basis. Many surgeons will request nasotracheal intubation; however, if this cannot be accomplished safely, it is reasonable for them to either work around an orotracheal tube (secured to the second molar) or perform a tracheostomy (if significant swelling and prolonged intubation is expected, as it is in many of these patients).
